The high-resolution topographic map was developed by Chinese experts from a variety of research institutions and universities using data from China’s lunar exploration Chang’e project as well as other data and research findings from foreign organizations.
The map shows 12,341 impact craters, 81 impact basins, 17 rock kinds, and 14 different types of structures on the moon, offering a wealth of information on the moon’s geology and development. It is anticipated that it will make a significant contribution to lunar scientific study, exploration, and landing site selection.
The project was directed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Geochemistry, which was joined by the Chinese Academy of Geological Science, China University of Geosciences, and Shandong University.
Science Bulletin released the map on May 30.
In 2020, the USGS Astrogeology Science Center created and released a 1:5,000,000 scale lunar map.
